FANCY TRIP Wednesday 21/1/15

Brisbane musician Fancy Face has today released his second EP, "Songs for Driving".
The EP is slightly softer around the edges, slower and more melodic than his previous work, yet it retains the manic, nervous energy that can sometimes be overwhelming.
The release is available on Bandcamp.

LADDER TO A NEW DAY Monday 22/12/14

Brisbane roots-rock band Cloud Ladder have recently released their debut self-titled EP.
I have seen these guys perform at Lost’s Pulp Fiction screening where local bands re-imagined the sound track and performed it live. They impressed me with their musical prowess, so I thought I’d give their EP a listen.
Come with me on my journey through the clouds.

Let it burn

Let it burn starts out gently, with a slightly melancholy feel. I felt a sincereness here that is respectful and warm.
I was struck by the soft heart of the music, and enjoy the 90’s feeling, being reminded of some of the better Incubus tracks.
The lyrics seem honest. My impression is that Dean (vocalist) is a person who has lived and been true to himself.
The band use their finesse to create a rich musical atmosphere, and share the spotlight well.
The changes come at the right time, showing their maturity as song-writers.
I enjoy the gentle, almost imperceptible build over the first two minutes of the song.
The clear recording and masterful production really brings the best out of the band.
To me, the lyrics paint a picture of bliss in abandon, or maybe it’s the maturity one gets when one has suffered and learned.
I enjoyed the juicy slap-guitar towards the end of the track, it utilising just the right amount of overdrive.
Nearing the end of the song, the brooding lead guitar, which is simple and effective, reminds me of Billy Howerdel’s playing in A Perfect Circle.
There is a good interplay between the instrumental passages and vocal sections, and there are not too many chorus repeats.
Cloud Ladder are a band who have refined their craft to an incisive point.

Old Times

I listened to Cloud Ladder this Monday morning, bleary-eyed after coaxing myself out of bed, and it’s been the perfect waking up experience.
“Old Times” brought me goose bumps and a small tear to my eye.
The music brings me to a gentle place I sometimes forget how to access.
I really enjoy the slightly discordant chords towards the end of this track – this is another professional touch that put these guys above their peers for me.

This Whimsical Life

I enjoy the ‘copper-kettle’ snare beat of this song – that and the up-and-down guitar rhythm evoke wholesome country images.
The song is a good third track, it gets up and goes straight away, enhancing the slow build of the EP overall.
The change to half-time for the chorus gives a feeling of being in an aeroplane taking off.
I enjoy the lyrics - it’s good to hear appreciation of the unexplained beauty of this world.

Dawn

This song bounces through the door with a buoyant gait and crisp guitar harmonics.
The EP has built me up step by step (or should I say rung by rung), and I feel balanced, ready to experience whatever my day has to offer.
The tone of the bass and guitar together gives a lovely crunch, and I see the orange light of a morning lamp or a pot-belly stove.

The EP is over in only thirteen minutes, but it definitely doesn’t have a bad moment, and it leaves me keen to hear the next release from these guys.
It’s available for download now on Bandcamp.

TESLA COIL RELEASES FRUSTRATION Thursday 18/12/14

Brisbane’s Tesla Coil have just released their single “Frustration Concerto in D Minor”.
This is their first release since their EP, "A Thing That Sits There", from August this year.
The syncopated piano lines remind me of 90’s house, and I get the feeling that Fin (multi-instrumentalist) had a cheeky smile on his face when recording this song.
The band seems to like being deliberately catchy and slightly annoying, and there is musical depth for one who cares to listen.
At first I wasn’t sure if the song was serious, with lines like “deeper ideas get confused”; I thought there may have been a criticism of society or someone Fin knows, but upon closer inspection, I am reasonably sure these guys are just having some fun.
This surety was confirmed for me when I read the line “the morons that showed up to a punk festival with a banjo” in their bio.
“Frustration” pounds along at a danceable 120 BPM, utilising classic disco octaves on the bass and an undeniable four-on-the-floor kick drum.
Fin’s vocals are both husky and fluid, and the song flows along nicely, with changes arriving punctually.
It develops to quite a nice sonic atmosphere towards the end, with layers of vocal rounds combined with extensive layers of brass and other instruments.
Having listened to their catalogue, I am convinced these guys are a genuinely eclectic and talented band, and I get the feeling they will be much more enjoyable to watch live.
They just so happen to have an all-ages show coming up tomorrow night at Via Studios. I urge you to get down there and treat your ears with some upbeat mania.

JUNKYARDS SHOW THEIR GEMS Monday 15/12/14

Brisbane locals Junkyard Diamonds have released their new EP: Vagrants in the Valley.
For those who have followed these guys over the years, you'll love the way these songs explode out of the speakers in glorious high-fidelity (and still deliciously grungey).
There's some classics on here, and some beautiful new songs.
The song "Surreal" cut to my soul. With it's gentle waltz time signature and masterful layering of piano and guitars, this cut is truly a treat for the ears and quite a different angle on the gritty dudes we've come to know and love. I implore you to get it into your ear holes.

HOW IS YOUR MORAL HYGIENE? Wednesday 19/03/14

Ugly Baby favourite Filthy Robot has released his debut album, Moral Hygiene.
Packed with crunchy mayhem, this experimental release should have you scratching your head as to precisely which pigeon hole it belongs in.
The distortion builds and hypnotises, and a picture emerges through the noise.
In a way, this album has some strangely poppy moments, and definitely some wry humour.
One assumes that Crimmins has developed a weird and wonderful perspective on reality... through what channels remains a mystery.
Give it a listen and experience the oddity for yourself.

PSYCHODELIA ROCKS THE ZOO Tuesday 24/7/12

PSYCHODELIA rocked The Zoo last Friday the 20th.

The M-Humm opened the night with an intense psychedelic journey, baring his soul for all to consume.
The one man show was an example of the kind of sound achievable with some innovation and imagination.

This was followed by The Plastic Fangs, who filled the room with their surf-inspired, finely crafted songs.
Meandering seamlessly from grungy punk to swing and evocative guitar landscapes, The Fangs showed
us they aren't constrained by any particular genre.

Next up was The Vampers, who churned out thumping rhythms dominated by upright bass and
astoundingly tight drums. Couple this with jazzy guitar breaks and smooth, cool greaser vocal stylings,
and you have an act that has Brisbane town buzzing.

The Doses came next, with new vocalist Sarah Johnson who soothed the room with her smooth, subtle performance.
Backed by agile guitar playing, tasteful melodic bass and energetic drums, The Doses provided an entertaining set
that left the songs ringing through one's head.

Finally, Grand Atlantic hit the stage to show us that we need go no further to Rock n Roll. A punchy, brazen performance
was delivered, with guest vocals by Brian L'Hulier (Dead Shades, Lovers of Modern Art).
These guys have become a mainstay of the Brisbane scene, and certainly showed us why.

Stay Tuned to Ugly Baby for details of our next show.
